the feeling of bliss

like raindrops covering me

love engulfing me…

This feeling I have longed,

like the new kid on the block looking to belong…

The Daily Post

Via this blog, I was turned on to some rules of writing that author Jonathan Franzen submitted to The Guardian. I’m no fan of Jonathan Franzen. In fact, I find him insufferable, and I’m maybe the only person in the world who doesn’t even think he’s that great a writer (I thought Freedom was really weak). Still, lots of people admire the guy, and he’s got a couple of acclaimed literary fiction books under his belt, so maybe he knows what he’s talking about. Here are his rules, with my comments.

The reader is a friend, not an adversary, not a spectator.

This comes up a lot in experimental writing, or at least writing that toys with the conventions most of us are used to, and I think it’s good advice. Generally I think it’s good advice to write in a way that helps your reader get what…

like a rare gem, love is hard to find.

many have searched but only found fouls gold.

some have given up their hopes and dreams of love.

but still there are those who fight…

I’ve been there,

seen it with my own eyes.

lost hold of it,

held it again

and seen it disappear with no forwarding address.

a four letter word with so many meanings

a four letter word with so many, dream-ending

to be without it –

is like to be naked in a room of your peers.

to be without it –

is like to be lost in despair.

where would we be if it didn’t exist?

where would we be if it we didn’t know this,

[whispers/soft spoken] of LOVE!

the bliss!

[whispers/soft spoken] of LOVE!

[whispers/soft spoken]  in LOVE!

the feeling that love…

[whispers/soft spoken]  is… LOVE!

Roses are red

Violets are blue

These flowers and chocolate kisses are not for you…

NOTE: I wrote this piece listening to Jay Z classic album ‘Reasonable Doubts’ and this concept/poem was birthed from the song “Regrets”… I hope you like, understand and do not read too far into it either…

I have regrets

Things I’d like to forget

Instead of drowning myself in a bottle of gin

Contemplating this rope round my neck

Memories I wish I wouldn’t remember

Thoughts I didn’t consider happy but painful moments in time

Seconds I wish were obsolete

A dream I wish I never dreamt

That path I hate my mom and absent father for-

Those short breaths of passion they shared…

Giving life to the other me that had to endure this journey of

Hopeless love

Impossible feats of adversity

Fantasies of happiness

Endless falls,

Let downs and broken promises

“This is the number one rule for your set
In order to survive, gotta learn to live with regrets
On the, rise to the top, many drop, don’t forget
In order to survive, gotta learn to live with regrets
This is the number one rule for your set
In order to survive, gotta learn to live with regrets
And through our travels we get seperated, never forget
In order to survive, gotta learn to live with regrets”

                                                -Jay Z “Regrets” chorus 1

I have regrets

Many, which I blame others for

Upon bending knees

Clasped hands

Eyes high into the sky,

As if,

The answers will fall with every raindrop

Covering the tears sliding down my cheek

As if,

The earth will awaken and open its jaws to swallow me whole

The easiest way to abandon the mistakes I’ve made

To no longer exist in a world where I can never be forgiven

And  love is no longer a given

As if,

Judgment has been passed

And this,

My last days!

I have regrets.

Some I wish I could forget

That many more, I wish to just let

Roll off my back and go…

Fight  no more, and learn to live with  regrets…

“You used to hold me, told me that I was the best
Anything in this world I want I could possess
All that made me want is all that I could get
In order to survive, gotta learn to live with regrets…”

                                                                                – Jay Z “Regrets” chorus 2
